| Portencross Castle, near West Kilbride - This sturdy, well-weathered, 14th-century, defensive keep is steeped in Scottish history. Legend has it that the coffins of the early Scottish Kings rested here, before being taken by sea for burial on Iona. A Spanish Galleon, fleeing from the defeat of the Armada, is believed to have foundered offshore, leaving much gold in the fast-flowing depths of the River Clyde. Nowadays, Portencross is a romantic, picturesque and, frequently, windswept fishing-village. Visit it for fabulous coastal walks and bracing sea-air. A definite must-see! |
| E-Ayrshire Birdwatching Site - Carlton is a fabulous place for birdwatchers. A wide diversity of seabirds may be observed on Seamill shore and beach. So, bring your wellies and binoculars! Many hedgerow birds may be spotted in the leafy garden at Carlton. We've put up bird-boxes and bird-feeders to encourage the finches, bluetits etc. It's a bird-friendly environment! |
| Holy Island - Centre for World Peace and Health - Just off the Arran coast, lies the remarkable Holy Island. It is an officially-designated UK Sacred Site. Important for people of all faiths, Holy Island is an international centre for Tibetan Buddhist meditation, retreat and interfaith harmony. The island is also home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Offshore, are seals, dolphins, whales and basking-sharks. You get to Holy Island by taking the Cal-Mac Ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick, then a local ferry to the island itself. For those of a spiritual or meditative outlook, Holy Island will be very special indeed. |
