| Recently voted as having the second most beautiful beach in all of the U.S., Ocracoke Island is at the southernmost tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and boasts almost 16 miles of pristine, undeveloped beaches and wild ponies. The pirate, Blackbeard, was killed here in 1718 during a naval battle. Nestled in a shady, protected spot is the British Cemetery, the final resting place of four sailors from the HMS Bedfordshire, which was torpedoed 22 November 1942 by a German U-boat.
