Spence Broughton, The Last Highway Man
February 1791, Spence Broughton robbed the Sheffield to Rotherham mail coach. The robbery took place at Ickles, Attercliffe Common. Legend has it that only one item was of value, a bill of exchange worth £123. In October Broughton was implicated in the robbery and was transported to York Assizes to be tried. He was found guilty and sentenced to death.
After Spence Broughton had been hanged his body was taken to the place of the crime, Broughton Lane, where it hung in a gibbet remaining there until 1827 to deter would be villains!
